David Lee Johnson, 80, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away peacefully with family by his side on Friday, February 17, 2023. A visitation will be held from 4 – 6 p.m. on Thursday, February 23, 2023, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Cedar Rapids. A funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 24, 2023, at Radiant Church, 3233 Blairs Ferry Road NE, Cedar Rapids, with a visitation one hour prior. Burial will follow at Linwood Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.

David was born January 31, 1943, in Canton, Illinois, the son of Clarence and Mary (Yocum) Johnson. He graduated from Cuba High School, Class of 1961. David went on to attend North Central Bible College in Minneapolis, where he majored in Bible and Pastoral studies; David’s mother was one of the first graduates and encouraged him to attend. He met Mary Louise Dather at North Central Bible College and they were united in marriage on May 19, 1973, at Storden Baptist Church in Storden, Minnesota. David worked for seven years at Douglas-Stemac Company in Minneapolis, and then moved to Tallahassee, Florida, in 1973 where he worked for the telephone company. In 1977, David moved to Cedar Rapids and began working for National Oats/Ralston Foods for 29 years until his retirement in 2008. He was a member of Radiant Church for 45 years and was very involved with the churches that Mary and David were members of. David served in nursing home ministries in Florida and Minneapolis, and also was a Deacon and worked church security.

David coached the boys little league baseball teams. He loved the Minnesota Vikings and Illinois Fighting Illini. David enjoyed golfing, watching old movies and classic westerns, and traveling. Above all else, he adored his grandchildren; they were his greatest joy.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Johnson of Cedar Rapids; three children, ReShana (Darrin) Sanford of Williston, North Dakota, Eric Johnson of Atkins, Iowa, and Tory Johnson of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren, Joshua (Claudia) Sanford, Ilyssa Sanford, Bryn Sanford, and Blake Johnson; one great-grandchild on the way; and twin brother, Daniel (Helen) Johnson of Canton, Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
