Daryl E. Ruby, 66, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died after a short battle with cancer Wednesday, May 7, 2014, at University of Iowa Hospital, Iowa City. A memorial gathering will be from 1-5 p.m. Sunday, May 11, 2014, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Madeline Ruby of Cedar Rapids; two sons, Erik (Deana) Ruby of Aurora, Illinois, and Scot (Kathy) Ruby of Fairfax, Iowa; two sisters, Teresa (Ron) Petrie of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Sheryl (Ricky) Taylor of Texas; one brother, Clarence (Marilyn) Ruby of Covington, Iowa; sister-in-law, Linda Ruby of Marion; five grandchildren, Camden, Hannah, Easton, Olivia, and Landon; father-in-law, Gilbert Jay of St. Paul, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Marilyn Ruby; grandparents, John and Marie Veerman; brother, Jon Ruby; mother-in-law, Garnet Jay.
Daryl was born on March 10, 1948, in Iowa City, son of Clarence and Marilyn (Veerman) Ruby Sr. He graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1966. Daryl attended Iowa State University for 2 years and then graduated in 1970 from Parsons College in Fairfield with a BS in Education. He worked for Wilson/Farmstead Foods in Cedar Rapids for 19 ½ years until they closed, then at Duffy’s Collectable Cars, and most recent for Classic Enterprises as a sales manager. On January 18, 1969, he married Madeline Jay at The Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Daryl was a member of the Cedar Hills Booster Club, Kennedy High School Booster, Babe Ruth Baseball and Oldsmobile Club of America. He enjoyed bowling, golfing, going to car shows, coaching his son’s sports and riding in RAGBRI. Daryl was a fan of the Packers and Yankees.
The family request memorials be directed to a scholarship for helping children participate in Youth Traveling Baseball.
