Darwin A. Nelson, 55, of 2257 C Street SW, died Thursday, January 2, 2003, in his home, following a sudden illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 6, 2003, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Del Bear, with military rites by VFW 788. Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, January 5, 2003, at the funeral home. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his wife, Karen; three children, Gary Nelson, Tammy (Troy) Beatty, and David Nelson, all of Cedar Rapids; one granddaughter, Jennifer Beatty; two sisters, Thea Beadle of Omaha, Nebraska, and Helen Stelzer of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and three brothers, Herbert Fisher of Denver, Colorado, Richard Fisher, Sr. and Marvin Nelson, both of Sioux City, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Charles.
Darwin was born January 30, 1947, the son of Andrew and Gertrude (Goodier) Nelson, in Sioux City, Iowa. He graduated in 1965 from Central High School in Sioux City and received his AA in Business Administration from Kirkwood Community College. Darwin served with the United States Army during the Vietnam War. On April 4, 1970, he was united in marriage to Karen Peniska in Sioux City. Darwin worked as a mailroom clerk at Kirkwood Community College for many years and also worked at Herbert Hoover Presidential Library in West Branch. He was a member of the VFW 788 and the Disabled American Veterans.
He loved to play cards, listen to music, tell jokes, and bring a smile to people?s faces. Darwin was a very likeable person who will be greatly missed by his many friends.
