Darwin C. Kohl, 67, of 1912 Williams Blvd. S.W., Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, April 22, 2007, at St. Luke?s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, following sudden illness. Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, April 26, 2007, at First United Methodist Church in Marion, by the Rev. Mike Morgan. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. The family will greet friends from 4 - 8 p.m. Wednesday at Murdoch Funeral Home& Cremation Center in Marion.
Survivors include his wife, Mardell, of 46 years; a daughter, Robin (Les) Williams of Marion; a son, Darwin "Chip? (Holly) Kohl of Marion; three grandchildren, Teisha (Patrick) Heft, Shelly Williams and Darwin Charles "D.J.? Kohl III; three great-grandchildren, Austin Sylvester, Abbigail Heft and Alicia Heft; his mother, Esther Kohl-Spurrier of Cedar Rapids; two sisters, Alberta (Richard) Shulista of Alburnett and Wanda (Steve) Rutan of Cedar Rapids; a sister-in-law, Dixie (Charles) Nosley of Marion; numerous nieces and nephews; and his faithful traveling companion, his dog, Dottie.
He was preceded in death by his father, Darrell.
Darwin was born February 17, 1940, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Darrell and Esther (Miller) Kohl. He graduated from Alburnett High School in 1959. On October 25, 1960, he was united in marriage to Mardell Mason in Lisbon, Iowa. Darwin farmed for many years and raised and sold pure-bred livestock. He worked at the Tom Riley Law Firm for fifteen years as a financial consultant for farmers. After his retirement, he operated D & D Farm Consulting from his home.
Darwin held the Iowa Farmer Degree and American Farmer Degree with FFA. He was president of the Linn County Pork Producers and served on the Linn County Extension Service. He served on the Linn Mar School Board for nine years and was president of both the Cedar Rapids Antique Car Club and the Model A Car Club of Cedar Rapids. Darwin was a member of First United Methodist Church in Marion.
Darwin was a private pilot and enjoyed flying. He also enjoyed helping his son on the farm, hunting, fishing, antique cars, the WMT Tractorcade and was a Hawkeye fan. He will be greatly missed by all.
