Darrel Gommels, age 89, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, went to be with the Lord on Nov. 11, 2023. He passed away at home surrounded by his loved ones.
Visitation will be held at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home on Wilson Ave. from 5 - 8 p.m. on Nov. 17, 2023. Memorial Services: 9:30 a.m. Nov 18, 2023, at Zion Lutheran Church, Hiawatha, Iowa. Reverend Kevin Zellers will be officiating. Burial will be 3 p.m. that day at Rose Hill Cemetery in Manson, Iowa.
Darrel is survived by his wife, Doris Gommels; and his children, Debbie (Al) Kitt, Dawn (Mike) Thomas, Glen (Christi) Gommels, Drenda (Scott) Curtis; his grandchildren, Trevor (Cara) Thomas, Whitney (Matt) Hinz, Amanda (Jeff) Cooling, Renae (James) Finley, Sarah (Terry) Mielke, Kayla Kitt, Taylor Gommels, Gage Gommels, Ashlyn Gommels, Demetria Buenting, Tiera (Cody) Miller, Kristen (Josh) Rogers, and Zain Curtis; and many great grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters, Shirley (Bob) Brown and Joyce Ness; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ed & Pearl Gommels; four brothers, Dale, Glenn, Roy, and Merle; his twin sister, Donna Gottschalk; and sister, Grace Bilstad.
Darrel Dean Gommels was born October 17, 1934, in Manson, Iowa, the son of Edward and Ellen Pearl (Friesner) Gommels. Darrel graduated high school in Manson, Iowa. He served two years in the US Army. Darrel married Doris Steckelberg on July 27, 1956, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fort Dodge, Iowa. As a couple, they resided in Fort Dodge, Iowa, until the last few years when they moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa
Darrel owned a vending service for 40 years. Darrel loved being with his children and grandchildren. His greatest joy was serving the Lord. He shared the love of God and grace through Christ with as many people as he could. He will be sorely missed.
