Darlene O. Hiner, 85, of 505 2nd Street North, Springville, died Friday, February 21, 2003, in Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, after a short illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 25, 2003, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, by the Rev. Barry Ensign-George. The casket will be closed at all times. Burial: Springville Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 - 8 p.m. Monday (February 24).

Survivors include two daughters, Doris (Larry) Koering and Dee (Jim) McNeill, all of Cedar Rapids; two sons, Jake (Beth) Hiner of Springville and Jerry (Verlee) Hiner of Central City; two sisters, Gertrude Horvat of Cedar Rapids and Maxine (Harold) Mohr of Brooklyn, Iowa; four grandchildren, Stacey Matus, Wade Hiner, Jason Martin-Hiner and Melissa Reynolds; six stepgrandchildren, Stephen Koering, Kim Wilson, David Koering, Jim McNeill III, Theresa Needham and Kris Jacobs; four great-granddaughters, Hope and Sarah Matus, and Lauren and Emily Hiner; six stepgreat-grandchildren, Jeremy Koering, Lisa Ainsworth, Amy Schnieders, and Ashley, Jennifer and Ben Koering; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jake; and two sisters, Mildred Besick and Elsie Riggs.

Darlene was born the daughter of Alfred and Alice Willetts Bolen on August 12, 1917, in Guernsey, Iowa. She was united in marriage to Jacob H. Hiner on December 31, 1935, in Brooklyn, Iowa. He died January 16, 1983. Darlene was a homemaker and worked beside her husband and son in their family business, Hiner Plumbing and Heating. She was a past member of Rebekah Lodge, where she served as Noble Grand.

Darlene enjoyed gardening, feeding the birds, bird watching, playing cards and spending time with her family.
