Darlene M. Goldsmith, 85, of Independence, formerly of Earlville and Manchester, Iowa, died Thursday, June 10, 2004, at the Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, Iowa, after a sudden illness.

Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 14 at the Fairview Cemetery, Earlville by Rev. Mark Gustafson. Friends may call from 4 until 8 p.m. Monday at the Clifton-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Earlville.

Darlene was born on March 14, 1919 the daughter of O.J. and Bessie (Denton) Splinter in Earlville. She graduated from Earlville High School in 1936. On January 14, 1941 Darlene was united in marriage to Fred A. Goldsmith at St. Joseph?s Rectory in Earlville. Darlene worked as a nurses? aid at the Mental Health Institute for eighteen years. She volunteered at West Village Health Center since retiring.

Darlene was an avid Iowa Hawkeye Fan, holding season tickets for football and men?s and women?s basketball. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the highlights of her life.

Darlene is survived by three children, John (Nancy) Goldsmith of Hastings, MN, Linda Cosgrove of Independence and Tom Goldsmith of Cedar Rapids; three granddaughters, Barbara (Dan) Hamilton of Inver Grove Heights, MN, Jennifer (Jeff) Ehlers of Round Rock, TX, and Andrea (Steve) Rost of Farmington, MN; three great-grandchildren, Jim, Jon and Janelle Hamilton; four brothers, Charles (LaVonne) Splinter, Eugene (Anita) Splinter and Earl (Ersel) Splinter all of San Diego, CA and Howard (Jerry) Splinter of San Antonio, TX; and one sister, Eunice (Dave) Matthews of Cedar Rapids.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband Fred A. Goldsmith on March 7, 1987.

A Darlene Goldsmith Memorial Fund has been established.
