Daniel “Dan” E. Sandoval, 81, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, January 25, 2023, at The Views of Marion from complications of Alzheimer’s. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, January 31, 2023, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion, Iowa. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to service on Wednesday at the church. Funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, February 1, 2023, at Marion Methodist Church in Marion, with full Military Honors by the Marion American Legion Post #298 and the United States Air Force Honors Detail. Entombment will be at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 2, 2023, at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Machesney Park, Illinois.

Dan was born October 3, 1941, to Salvador (Dan) and Mary (Garza) Sandoval in San Antonio, Texas. He graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1959. Dan then enlisted in the United States Air Force for four years and learned the trade of being an Air Traffic Controller. After he was Honorably discharged and returned home to San Antonio, he attended San Antonio Junior College and graduated from the University of Texas in Austin, Texas. While visiting his mother and sisters in Aurora, Illinois he applied for an air traffic controller position and was accepted immediately. Dan was assigned to Rockford, Illinois, where he worked faithfully for 15 years. Dan was then transferred to Springfield, IL where he became a tower supervisor until his promotion to Tower Manager in Dubuque. The family moved to Cedar Rapids where Dan was the Tower Manager for the Eastern Iowa Airport until his retirement in 1995. Dan later worked at Barnes and Noble for twelve and a half years.

Dan met Marilyn Ackland and they were married on October 20, 1973. They have two children, Andrea (Jared) Christensen, and Mark Sandoval; six grandchildren, David, Anna, Michael, Grace, Matthew and Lucas Christensen.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Salvador and Mary; parents-in-law, Howard and Ethel Ackland; two infant sons; and brother, Richard Sandoval.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Daniel’s memory may be directed to the Marion Methodist Church.
