Daniel Joseph Ryan, 79, of Marion, died Saturday, October 2, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Funeral Mass: 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 8, 2010, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion. Family will greet friends from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, October 7, 2010, at the Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion, where a vigil will begin at 7 p.m. Burial with military rites: Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Betty; 5 children, Catherine (Alan) Jones, Colleen Ryan, Nancy Ryan, Daniel (Mansun) Ryan, and Joseph Ryan; 5 grandchildren, Alicia Hrachovec, Michael Hrachovec, Danielle Hrachovec, Echo Jones (Alfredo) Angeles, and Brittany Jones; 2 great-grandchildren, Mariana Angeles, and Erick Angeles; 2 brothers, Tom Ryan of Florida, and James (Doris) Ryan of Cedar Rapids; and a sister, JoAnn Brady of Oregon.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 infant children; 4 siblings, Mary Winifred, Robert Ryan, Kathleen Baker, and Patrick Ryan.
Dan was born October 5, 1930, in Cedar Rapids, the son of John T. and Catherine D. (Walsh) Ryan. He attended Immaculate Conception School, and graduated from McKinley High School in 1949, and DeVry Tech Institute in 1955. He married Betty Jo Kiser on October 25, 1958, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. Dan served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He worked as a Test Tech at Collins Radio for 30 years, retiring in 1988. Dan was a member of the American Legion Post #298 of Marion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He served many years as union steward for IBEW Union Local #1362.
