Daniel Joseph Ales, 89, passed away on Wednesday, July 6, 2022, at his Cedar Rapids home. The family will host a rosary at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 10, 2022, with visitation to follow from 2 – 4 p.m. at St. John XXIII Church at 8100 Roncalli Drive SW in Cedar Rapids. Funeral Mass will begin at 10 a.m. Monday, July 11, 2022, at the church with a visitation one hour prior. Graveside services with military honors will be held at 5 p.m. on Monday, July 11, 2022, at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Muscatine. Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service assisted the family.
Dan was born on March 4, 1933, in Muscatine, Iowa, the son of Edward and Anna (Vogl) Ales. He graduated from St. Matthias Catholic School and Muscatine Community College. Dan was united in marriage to Shirley Mae Woltmann on June 17, 1953, at St. Matthias Catholic Church in Muscatine. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.
Dan was the owner of Dan De Donuts, Dan De Restaurant and Dan De Enterprises Vending in Muscatine. He was a member of St. John XXIII Church, Elks Lodge, Moose Lodge, VFW Post #1565, and proud past president of the Iowa Restaurant Association. Dan was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. The couple also enjoyed the travels they experienced during their time together. One of Dan’s fondest memories was his Eastern Iowa Honor Flight to Washington DC with his son, Paul. He loved the time he spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was famously known by his friends and family for his donuts, milkshakes, and candy. Dan will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Survivors include his loving wife of 69 years, Shirley Ales, of Cedar Rapids; children, Sheryl (Bob) Walker of Austin, Texas, Susan (Joe) Ales-Clow of Girard, Kansas, Paul (Tammy) Ales of Muscatine, and Sharon (David) Langenberg of Fairfax, Iowa; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and brother, David Ales of Muscatine.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Anna Ales; sister, Denise Heinrichs and her husband Vince; sister-in-law, Janet Ales; and nephew, David Heinrichs.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Wounded Warrior Project.
