Dallas “Oley” F. Oler, 83, died Sunday, September 10, 2017, at the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice of Mercy in Hiawatha, Iowa, due to complications of diabetes. He was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of two. Dallas was born June 17, 1934, the youngest of six children to Fred and Loah (Jones) Oler. He received the Joslin Victory Award in 2011 at The Joslin Center in recognition of his exceptional achievement in living courageously with diabetes for 75 years.
Dallas married Patricia Ragan Steggall on September 5, 1954. He managed the 16th Avenue Shell station for several years and later the Plaza Standard station. His work at the station was at the time when “self-service” didn’t exist. Dallas was a mechanic all his life and after retiring from Allen Motor Co., he drove the shuttle for Saturn.
Dallas is survived by his wife, Patricia; daughter, Teresa; son, Greg (Sue); grandchildren, Emily and Erica; step-grandson, Dustin Smith; sister, Betty Nielsen and several nieces and nephews.
At his request, cremation will be done by Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service and there will be no service.
