Dale R. Newman, 92, community leader, WWII Navy Patrol Commander, accomplished farmer and above all, family man died on January 3, 2016.

Dale courted a beautiful young school teacher from Springville, Iowa. He was married to Doris George upon his return from the South Pacific on February 22nd, 1946. They were blessed with two children, Scott and Christine. Dale loved the house his grandfather had built and was diligent in making improvements through the years. He worked long and hard to maintain the property and make it profitable for this family. He loved to spend hours in his later years on his mower, and many a passerby marveled at how exactly squared and perfect his 200 foot hedge was always trimmed.

Dale flew a PBY Cataline “flying boat” in WWII and flew many missions in South Pacific searching for downed pilots, as well as other missions. Years later, when he was in the Naval reserve, he buzzed the family farm to the delight of his children. He was serious when needed but loved to surprise and delight after a hard day’s work.

It was very difficult for Dale to carry on after Doris passed away, but, as was his nature, he did so with dignity and with the anticipation that they would once again be together. He visited her grave often to talk. We are proudly listing below all of the particulars of this wonderful man’s life, achievements and family that he so loved and whom so loved him.

Dale was born on the family farm east of Martelle, Iowa, November 8th, 1923 to Harry Newman and Bertha Leinbaugh Newman. He attended and graduated from Martelle Consolidated School in 1941. He was the top 4H livestock judge at the Iowa State Fair in 1941. He attended Iowa State University until enlisting into the Navy as an aviation cadet in 1942. He attained the rank of full lieutenant as a Patrol Plane Commander in the US Navy and was released to inactive duty in 1946. He served in reserve squadrons in Davenport, Ottumwa, Iowa and Glennview, Illinois. He became a partner in the family arm for several years with his father until he became sole owner and operator.

Dale was very active in community service and was director and President of these organizations: Central Iowa Power Cooperative, Maquoketa Valley REC, Martelle Coop Telephone Association, Martelle Consolidated School Board, Jones County School Board, and Hawkeye Angus Association. Dale was also a Jones County Soil Conservation Commissioner and Chairman, Jones County FHMA committee member and Chairman, Martelle 4-H Club leader and Jones County 4-H committee member. He was proud of the fact that he was on the original steering committee that planned Kirkwood Community College. Dale was a member of the Cedar Rapids Ag Bureau for several years and was Superintendent of the beef Cattle show at the All Iowa Fair when it was flourishing. In 1957 he was the Outstanding Young Farmer in Jones County and third place in the state of Iowa. He has been a part of the Anamosa Legion Post and the Anamosa Masonic Lodge since 1946. Dale was a lifelong member of the Martelle United Methodist Church and served as co-Sunday School Superintendent for a short time.

Dale is survived by his son, Scott Thomas Newman of Cedar Rapids and Christine Diane Emrie and her husband Dan, of Springfield, Missouri; grandchildren, Michael Newman of Cedar Rapids, Angela McKenna of St. Louis, Missouri, Curtis Adams and his wife, Sarissa, of Springfield, Missouri, and David Emrie and his wife, Stephanie, of Fort Wayne, Indiana; great-grandchildren, Kellan McKenna, Evan and Clay Adams, and Connor and Hayden Emrie.
