D. Mildred "Tookie? Olinger, 93, a longtime resident of Toddville, died Thursday, November 25, 2004 in her home. Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 30, 2004 at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center by Rev. Del Bear. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Monday, November 29 at the funeral home. Burial: Oliphant Cemetery in rural Toddville.
Survivors include her son, Theodore (Doris) Olinger of Toddville; her daughter, Virginia (Charles) Beaner of Marion; her son, Dwight (Carol) Olinger of Burnsville, Minnesota; her son, Richard (Dianne) Olinger of Toddville; her daughter, Janeece (David) Lasley of Monticello; sixteen grandchildren, David (Madilyn) Beaner, Nancy (Mike) Harris, Steve Olinger, Becky Olson, Jeff (Heidi) Olinger, Lisa (Joe) Applehof, Anita (Jim) Thompson, Mike (Corey) Olinger, Kathy (Eric) Nichols, Scott (Courtenay) Olinger, Chad (Autumn) Olinger, Peter Olinger, Eric (Sally) Olinger, Jared Lasley, Matt Olinger, and Erin Lasley and fiancé Steve Rees; and fifteen great-grandchildren, Kelli Harris, Alec Frank, Erica Frank, Catherine Olinger, Drew Olinger, Zack Olinger, Dani Nichols, Forrest Olinger, Tess Olinger, Huey Olinger, Carrie Olinger, Max Olinger, Trenton Thompson, Nick Nichols, and Tyler Thompson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jay; her parents, Luther and Florence; her step-father, John Matheny; her infant daughter, Evelyn Olinger; her sister, Maxine Marshall; her infant brother, Everrett McCreary; and a great-granddaughter, Amanda Harris.
Dorothy Mildred Olinger was born on February 17, 1911 in Cedar Rapids to Luther and Florence (Elson) McCreary. She attended country school in the Toddville area and graduated from Toddville High School in 1927. Mildred married her high school sweetheart, Theodore Jay Olinger, on August 1, 1928 in Nashua, Iowa, at the Little Brown Church in the Vale. She and Jay first made their home in Toddville, then in Center Point and Bellflower, California, returning to Toddville in 1943. The couple owned and operated Olinger Construction for many years and Mildred helped Jay with painting, staining, and other tasks associated with homebuilding and remodeling. Jay died in December of 1973. Mildred also worked as a cook at the Springhouse Restaurant in Cedar Rapids, starting in 1969 and retiring in 1983.
Mildred was a member of the Toddville Free Methodist Church, where she was active in WMI and the Open Arms Society. She was also proud to be an honorary member of the Midway Homemakers.
Mildred, or "Tookie? as she was affectionately known by her family and friends, was a warm and caring person who was known for her wit and sense of humor. Her special love was her family and she enjoyed spending time with her numerous children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Mildred was a gifted artist and an avid reader. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, fishing, and spending time in the outdoors. She was greatly loved and will be dearly missed.
A memorial fund has been established in Mildred?s memory.
