Cpl. Andrew West, 22, of Camp Pendleton, California, formerly of Van Horne, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, August 20, 2017, in Riverside, California, from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. Visitation: 3:00 - 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 29, 2017, at Stonebridge Church, 1829 Stoney Point Road SW, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Service: 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 30, 2017, at the church, conducted by Pastors Keith Knight and Robin Tyner.
Survivors include his parents, Paul and Sue (Grant) West of Van Horne; siblings, Sutherland (Johnathan) Rees of Urbana, Iowa, Stratton West of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Sheppard West of Van Horne; two sisters, Pam McConkey of Wellington, Ontario, Canada and Kim Reid of Belleville, Ontario, Canada; nephews, Brady and Walker; niece, Remington; and grandparents, George C. (Doreen) Grant of Burlington, Ontario, Canada and Gloria Coyne of Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
He was preceded in death by his grandmother, J. Eleanor Grant.
Andrew was born on July 14, 1995, in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, son of Paul and Sue West. Andrew enlisted with the United States Marine Corps in November of 2013, on delayed entry. He shipped after graduating from Marion High School in April of 2014. He served as a Rifleman 0311 and trained as a Scout Swimmer in Japan. Cpl. West was qualified as a MCIWS (Marine Corps Instructor of Water Survival). Andrew was a man of character, honor and integrity. He had a compassionate heart for others and an infectious smile. Everyone who knew him called him their Best Friend. He was always there if anyone needed him.
