Clyde E. Herman, 78, of Earlville, Iowa, died at his home Tuesday evening July 13, 2004 after a two-year struggle with heart disease and diabetes.
Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 16 at the Earlville United Parish by Rev. Ross Wyman. Friends may call after 10:00 a.m. on Friday at the church. Inurnment will be in the Zion Cemetery, Colesburg with military rites by the New Vienna VFW Post #7736. Clifton-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Earlville is in charge of arrangements.
Clyde Ernest was born September 30, 1925 to Leonard B. and Estella "Della? L. (Woeste) Herman at the family home in Elk Township. He attended Oak Grove rural school and graduated from Colesburg High School in 1942. After graduation, Clyde helped on the family farm and helped out neighbors. Clyde was inducted into the United States Army on September 11, 1950. He received his training at Fort Riley, Kansas and Aberdeen, Maryland. Clyde spent one year, four months and twenty-nine days overseas during the Korean Conflict. He received the Korean Service Metal with four bronze stars and the United Nations Service Metal. He was discharged on September 3, 1952. He returned to work on the farm with his brothers and also operated a sawmill.
Clyde was a member of the Colesburg United Methodist Church and the New Vienna Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #7736. Clyde liked to show cattle with a niece and nephew at the Delaware and Dubuque County Fairs. He enjoyed his farm experiences and spending time with his nieces and nephew.
Clyde is survived by two brothers, Dean & Wayne Herman and a sister-in-law, Betty Herman, all of Earlville; a niece, Darla Gaskill of Manchester; a nephew, Lyle Herman of Earlville; a great-niece, Melissa Gaskill Cashen; a great-nephew, Scott Gaskill; a great-great-niece, Alyssa; a special cousin, Bill Dittmer and several other cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard & Della Herman; and a brother, Arthur Herman on June 19, 1992.
Memorials may be directed to the American Heart or Diabetes Foundations. The family requests no flowers.
