Clarence J. Sampson, 89, of Hiawatha, died Saturday, April 11, 2015, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Service: 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 17, 2015, at St. Andrews Lutheran Church with Rev. Zachary Johnson officiating. Visitation: 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, April 16, 2015, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion, Iowa. Graveside Service: 2:30 p.m., West Union Cemetery, West Union, Iowa.
Clarence Sampson was born December 28, 1925, in Clermont, Iowa, to John and Ella (Holt) Sampson. He served in the Army with the 2nd Armored Division at Ft. Hood, Texas, and was later sent to Germany until 1952. Clarence married Norma Berentson in West Union on May 24, 1953. The couple then moved to Cedar Rapids where Clarence was an Industrial Engineer at Rockwell Collins for 30 years, retiring in 1989. He was an active member of St. Andrews Lutheran Church, Hiawatha American Legion Post #735 and the Hiawatha History Committee.
Clarence is survived by his children, Gary Sampson of Cedar Rapids and Judy Sampson of Marion; his sister, Mearle Lee of Seattle, Washington; his brother, Norman (Helen) Sampson of Neuman, Georgia; his sister-in-law, Kathryn Sampson of California; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Norma, six brothers and four sisters.
Clarence enjoyed attending family reunions and helping everyone. After retiring, he enjoyed working with is son, Gary, making parts for his toy business.
