Clara P. Hempstead, 90, of Delhi, formerly of Manchester, died Wednesday, February 7, 2007, at her son?s home with her family and friends surrounding her.
Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 12, 2007 at the Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Manchester by Rev. Roger Henry. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Sunday and an hour before services on Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Masonville.
Clara was born May 13, 1916 in Globe, Arizona, the daughter of Charles and Jannie (Hancock) Hollow. She graduated salutatorian from Puyallup High School in Puyallup, Washington in 1934, where she received the Karshner Award. Clara then attended the University of Washington. On October 31, 1935, Clara was united in marriage to Harold A. Hempstead in Tacoma, Washington. The couple moved to the Manchester, Iowa area to farm. Clara began working at the Delaware County ASCS office. In 1975, the couple moved to town. Harold died November 18, 1985. Clara moved to her son?s home in Delhi in 1989.
Clara enjoyed watching football and basketball, crocheting and knitting for her family, and loved baking for her family?s birthdays and the holidays. Her family was her life.
Clara is survived by her son, Charles (Jackie) Hempstead of Delhi; eight grandchildren; twenty-nine great-grandchildren; eighteen great-great grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Gladys Gustafson of Puyallup, WA.
Clara was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold Hempstead; a great-granddaughter, Jessie Hempstead; three sisters, Mary Goodner, Elsie Ulrich and Phyllis Jernigan; and a brother-in-law, Clifford Gustafson.
