Charles R. Wesbrook, Sr, 80, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died May 1, 2014, at Living Center East, Cedar Rapids. A Memorial Gathering will be held from 4 to 7 pm Monday, May 5, 2014, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Inurnment: Linwood Cemetery Mausoleum, Cedar Rapids, at a later date.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Loretta; his children, Robin Oliver, Steven Wesbrook, Matthew (Lani) Wesbrook, Charles Wesbrook, Jr, and Ronald (Raegan) Wesbrook, all of Cedar Rapids; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two brothers, Louie (Jean) Wesbrook of Cedar Rapids and Frank (Glenda) Wesbrook of Bakersfield, California; and sister-in-law, Ruth Wesbrook of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 7 month old daughter, Laurie Ann; son-in-law, Sam Oliver; brother, Melvin; and two sisters, Irene Sova and Ruth McCauly.
Charles was born June 7, 1933, the son of Harry and Elsie (Kobusch) Wesbrook, in St. Charles, Missouri. His family moved to Cedar Rapids when he was 9 years old and he attended Tyler and Wilson Schools. He served his country with the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. On May 28, 1955, Charles was united in marriage to Loretta Young in Cedar Rapids. He started working for Johnson Gas Appliance Company in 1951 and retired in 1996, after 45 years of service. Charles was a member of the Local UAW 1349.
Charles was an active hobbyist and community member fixing bicycles for the neighborhood children. He was an avid gardener who worked on his garden daily. He always liked to share the tomatoes from his garden. He was very good at math, enjoyed gambling at Tama, going to the races at Hawkeye Downs and spending time at Koch’s.
Instead of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in memory of Charles.
