Charles M. Leibold, 86, of Earlville, died, Friday, November 16, 2012 at Oak Crest Manor Nursing Home in Dyersville. Funeral Mass will be 11:00 am, Monday, November 19, 2012 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Earlville. Visitation will be from 2:00 pm - 8:00 pm, Sunday, November 18, 2012 at Clifton-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Earlville where there will be a 2:30 pm Knights of Columbus Rosary Service and a 4:00 pm Scripture Service. Additional Visitation will be 9:30 am - 10:30 am, Monday at the funeral home prior to Mass. Burial: St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Earlville with Military Rites by the Earlville American Legion.
Charles was born November 24, 1925, the son of John Thomas and Elizabeth (Pins) Leibold. He attended school at St. Joseph's High School in Farley, graduating in 1943. Charles served in the United States Army as a MP at Ft. Polk, LA during the Korean War era from 1950 - 1952. On August 5, 1953, Charles was united in marriage to Irene Henrietta Klas at New Vienna; Irene passed away on March 8, 2002. They farmed in the Edgewood area before moving to a farm north of Earlville in 1961, besides farming Charles worked at Modernfold during the 1970's and moving to Earlville in 1991. Charles was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Earlville, he served on the Parish Board at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Greeley, was a member of the Earlville Community Club, the Earlville American Legion, and the Knights of Columbus. In addition to his love of God and his family, he also loved the land. Playing cards was his #1 pastime (One year, he even kept track of his winnings and losses, and was proud of the fact that he only lost $3.00). He also enjoyed reading, taking care of his flowers and planting his potatoes and tomatoes. His family admired him for his dedication to his daily walks and his three wheel bike rides around Earlville. Charles was a man of few words, never complained or uttered a negative comment.
Charles is survived by his children, Mary Jo (Charlie) Goldsmith of Dyersville, Dave (Kathy) Leibold of Dyersville, Steve (Julie) Leibold of Earlville, Geralyn (Dave) Russ of Anamosa, and Ann Cicero of Sauk City, WI; 14 grandchildren, Matt (Sara) Goldsmith, Kristi (Wes) Burkle, Brent (Kristy) Goldsmith, Ryan (Roxanne) Leibold, Lindsey Leibold, Kyle Leibold, Curt Leibold, Brad Leibold, Kelli Leibold, Kara Leibold, Jackie Russ, Andy Russ, Nathan Cicero, and Parker Cicero; 10 great-grandchildren, Ava, Neena, Taylor, Ella, Libby, Brynlee, Blake, Bennett, Abby, Jack; three brothers, Melvin Leibold of Dubuque, Donald (Ruth) Leibold of Peosta, and Loras Leibold of Farley; and a sister-in-law, Leona Althoff of Manchester; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Charles was preceeded in death by his parents; his wife, Irene; a son, Joseph Charles in infancy; three brothers, Leo Leibold, Emil (Betty) Leibold, and Ray (Mary) Leibold; a sister, Rosemary (Celester) White; brothers/sisters-in-law, Virginia Leibold, Loretta, Ida, Clotilda, Esther, and Martha Jane Klas, Ted Althoff, Mary (Ben) Borgerding, Albert (Alvina) Heilers, Steve (Rose) Riniker, and Elmer Klas.
