Charles W. Hemphill, 72, of 1419 12th Street, Marion, died Monday, August 11, 2008, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids, following a long illness. A Celebration of Life Gathering will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, August 14, 2008, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. In accordance with Charles wishes, he was cremated and there will be no formal service.
Survivors include his mother, Gertrude Hemphill of Walker; his wife, Mary Jo; his children, Jerry (Kim) Hemphill of Cedar Rapids, Charlene (Philip) Schulte of Walford, Mike (Wendy) Hemphill, Debbie (Brian) Franck, both of Cedar Rapids, Sheila (Tim) Runyan of Walford, Brian (special friend, Jess Patten) Hemphill and Tracy (Jeff) Bruner, both of Cedar Rapids; 17 grandchildren, Brandon, Drew, Kaylee, Corey, Zach, Brennan, Tyler, Brylee, Sage, Kacy, Jase, Cody, Kyle, Seth, Raney, Charli and Georgi; and his siblings, Robert (Marilyn) Hemphill of Central City, Geraldine (Kenneth) LeHew of Holland, Richard (Jean) Hemphill of Toddville, Carl Hemphill of Reno, Nevada, Paul Hemphill of Georgia, David Hemphill of Missouri and Sue Gorsh of Walker.
He was preceded in death by his father; and a sister, Diane Hemphill.
Charles was born November 21, 1935, the son of Gerold and Gertrude (Wachal) Hemphill, in Toddville, Iowa. A Toddville High School graduate, he served his country with the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. On October 4, 1961, Charles was united in marriage to Mary Jo LeHew in Anamosa, Iowa. He worked for Cargill in Cedar Rapids.
Charles enjoyed fishing, horses, watching westerns and NASCAR. He also enjoyed collecting fishing poles and ducks, but his greatest love was being with his family, especially his grandchildren.
A memorial fund has been established in memory of Charles.
