Charles Wilbur Groff, 77, of Central City, died Thursday, April 17, 2003, in his home following a sudden illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 23, 2003, at First United Methodist Church in Central City, by the Rev. Nick Needham. Burial will be at a later date. Friends may call at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Central City, from 4 - 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, 2003, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.
Survivors include his wife, Priscilla; his children, Jeff Groff and wife Ilse of Cedar Rapids, Fran Overett and Bill Crawford of Anamosa, Jennifer Hyland of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Diane Johnston and husband Kevin of Marion, Eric Groff of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Jim Groff and wife Carlann of Huntington Beach, California; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters, Betty Walker of North Liberty and Diane Harrington and husband Dennis of Muscatine; and a brother, Jim Groff and wife Betty of Marion.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Rebecca; two brothers; and one sister.
Charlie was born the son of Guy and Bernice Rowland Groff on November 14, 1925, in Hartwick, Iowa. On January 13, 1951, he was united in marriage to Priscilla Erickson in Iowa City. Charlie was a World War II Army veteran, serving in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. He received the Pacific Theater Ribbon, Bronze Battle Star, Army of Occupation Medal, Japan Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart and the Victory Medal. For many years, Charlie was a tool and die maker for Harnischfeger Corp. in Cedar Rapids, retiring in 1986.
Charlie was a member of First United Methodist Church, Central City, Linn County Master Gardeners and a lifelong member of Central City American Legion Wapsi Post 421. For fourteen years, Charlie was a Scoutmaster in Central City. He was an avid outdoorsman and during his lifetime, made over thirty trips to the boundary waters.
