Charles R. Chase, 82, of Fairfax, Iowa, formerly of 2212 D Street S.W., Cedar Rapids, died Friday, August 15, 2008, in Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, following a short illness. Memorial Service: 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 19, 2008, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Del Bear. Military honors by American Legion Hanford Post #5.
Survivors include his four daughters, Karen (Ron) Keilholtz of Marion, Paula (Rick) Limkemann of Fairfax, Gail (Bill) Beard of Arlington, Texas and Elizabeth (Tom) Harmer of Cedar Rapids; He is also survived by ten grandchildren and ten great grandchildren, Tammi Keilholtz and her children, Austin, Amber, Katie and Joshua, Tasha (David) Egan and their children, Kara and Emma, Traci (Craig) Stump and their children, Mackenzie and Cameron, Casey Keilholtz, Adam (Nicole) Harmer, Ben Harmer and Chad (Brooke) Harmer, Dallis Harmer, Dawn (Tim) Miranda and their children, Vaughn and Antonio, Michael Bartosh, and Shawnett Hayden and her children, Aubrey, Steth and Parker; one great-great grandchild, Karli Joy Hinzie; and many nieces and nephews.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Patty; sister, Arlene Erickson; brothers, Frank (Cokey) Chase and James (Jimmy) Chase.
Charles was born June 6, 1926, to Timothy and Elizabeth (Harvey) Chase in Toddville, Iowa. Charles served his country in the U.S. Army military police. He married Patty Lou Graham on July 12, 1950 in Iowa City. They spent 52 years together before Patty’s death in November of 1996. He worked at Penford for 56 years before retiring in May of 2007.
Charles was alert and active until the end, enjoying his family and his special friend “Max”, his cat. He loved playing cards and slot machines, especially when he won, and introduced the dollar game to the whole family during holidays. He was a remarkable man who taught his children the importance of loyalty, honesty and responsibility to family. He will be dearly missed by his family and life-time friend, Darlene Klinger of Ocala, Florida.
