Charles W. "Bill? Woods, 81, of 209 LaSalle Dr. SW, Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, August 28, 2005, at St. Luke?s Hospital, Cedar Rapids, following a sudden illness. Memorial Service: 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 2, 2005, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, where friends may call from 4:30-8:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 1, 2005. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his wife, Frances; a daughter, Sherren C. Huston and her husband John of Cedar Rapids; two granddaughters, Cathy Ann Huston of Cedar Rapids and Cindy Lynn Huston of Chicago, Illinois; a brother, Leonard of Sun Lakes, Arizona; and many other dear relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Robert.
Bill was born March 19, 1924, the son of Clarence and Myrtle Ogan Woods, in Lorimor, Iowa. On May 12, 1945, he married Frances Sherren in West Union, Iowa. They were married 60 years. Bill served three years in the United States Maritime Service during World War II. Bill received his B.A. and M. ED. Degrees from Drury College in Springfield, Missouri and an M.S. degree from Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
He was a life member of the NEA, a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church and the VFW Post #5. Bill received the Scouter?s Award in Missouri, belonged to Friends of Cedar Rapids Public Library, and was a former member of the Masonic Lodge in Center Point, where he graduated from Center Point High School in 1941.
An educator and coach for 36 years, he spent 26 years at Roosevelt Junior High School in Cedar Rapids. Bill was an avid fan of Jefferson athletics, attending football, basketball, baseball and softball events.
