Carolyn Cooper Hood, 89, of Sewickley, Pennsylvania, died Saturday, December 15, 2018, of Parkinson’s disease. The family will greet friends from 9:00 – 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 22, 2018, at Springville Presbyterian Church, 165 Broadway Street, Springville. Funeral Services will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the church on Saturday. Burial will follow at Jordan’s Grove Cemetery, rural Central City. Funeral arrangements will be handled by Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion, Iowa.
Carolyn was the daughter of the late Henry and Lucy Cooper, (née Pollock), born June 16, 1929, in Springville, Iowa. She graduated as valedictorian from Springville High School in 1946, and from Iowa State Teachers College, (now the University of Northern Iowa), with a Bachelor’s degree in English, in 1950. Carolyn married her high school classmate, J. Gifford Hood, after college, and taught school in Iowa for two years. She stayed home for many years to raise her three children, and then managed a small business with her husband before taking a position with Cal State San Bernardino, as a financial aid advisor. Carolyn retired in 1997, and lived with her husband first in Vacaville, California, and then in Battle Creek, Michigan. She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Gifford Hood, in 2012. Carolyn was a lifelong and faithful member of the Presbyterian Church, she was an accomplished pianist and seamstress, and she loved classical music.
Carolyn is survived by her three children and their spouses, Henry (Pam) Hood of Plano, Texas, Lydia (Craig) Holley of Sewickley, Pennsylvania, and Daniel (Camille) Hood of Battle Creek, Michigan; six grandchildren, Russell Holley, Katherine Hood, Lucy Holley, Christine Madisen Hood, Larissa Holley and Jordan Hood; and one great-granddaughter, Lily Holley.
