Carolyn Wood Magruder Baughman, daughter of Charles Franklin and Jewell Maud Magruder, was born April 25, 1925 in Lentner, Missouri. She departed this life Saturday, November 3, 2012, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa at the age of 87 years. Funeral Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, November 8, 2012, First Presbyterian Church in Marion by Rev. Howard Chapman. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion and one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial: Oak Shade Cemetery in Marion, Iowa.
On June 19, 1949, she was married to Joe Richard Baughman and to this union a son and two daughters were born.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her older sister, Marjorie Magruder Glass.
Carolyn is survived by her children, Paul Baughman (Donna) of Strawberry Point, Iowa, Charlotte Mayahi (Issa) of Austin, Texas, and Jane Baughman of Lebanon, Missouri; grandchildren Stephanie Ryan (Shannon), Fahad Mayahi (Miranda), Joe Baughman (Kristy), Anna Mayahi, and Kristina Austin (Aaron); great-grandchildren Devin and Gavin Mayahi, and Zachary Austin; three brothers Charles Magruder (Ilene) of Fort Dodge, Iowa, Jack Magruder (Sue) of Kirksville, Missouri, and Mitch Magruder (Janice) of Nevada, Missouri; brother-in-law Ernest Glass of Brevard, North Carolina; sister-in-law, Barbara Whisler of Columbus, Ohio; and, many nieces and nephews.
Carolyn was raised in Lentner and attended high school in Shelbina, Missouri where she was active in the Music Department, playing bass clarinet in the band. Upon graduation, she attended Northeast Missouri State Teacher’s College (now Truman University) as a music education major with piano emphasis. While attending college, she also had two full-time organ positions at local churches. Her name was placed in the book of “Who’s Who among America’s Universities and Colleges” and she was elected President of her senior graduating class. Upon graduating from college in three years, she started her career teaching instrumental and vocal music in several Missouri and Iowa locations. She began teaching in the Marion school system in 1966 and was chosen the “Iowa State Teacher of the Year, Honoree” in 1985. She retired from the Marion school system in 1991 after 31 years of teaching public school music. Upon retirement, she was employed with Kirkwood Community College. Carolyn played the organ for over 20 years at several churches, including Kenwood Park Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids where she also served as Deacon and Elder. She also gave piano lessons throughout the years, until the time of her passing. Her students held a special place in her heart. In 2000, Carolyn recorded a piano CD, “Classics by Carolyn.” This project was a compilation of requests by her children and some of Carolyn’s favorite compositions.
Carolyn was a member of several organizations including P.E.O., Alpha Beta Kappa Sorority, Church Women United, and Marion Retired Teachers. At the time of her death, she was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Marion where she had served as Elder and was a member of the Sarah Circle.
Carolyn was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and a caring friend and neighbor. She lived her life with dignity and grace. Those who had the pleasure of knowing her will miss her kind heart, and joyful, generous spirit.
