Carol was born on December 18, 1934, in Monona, Iowa, to Otto and Hulda (Peters) Pape, and grew up with her three sisters and one brother. She was united in marriage to Robert “Bob” Schillig at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church on October 11, 1958. Bob and Carol were married for 63 years and raised three children.

Carol worked at Northwestern Bell and then KGAN TV for 20 years and enjoyed going to reunion lunches with her co-workers after she retired. Carol was an active member with Bob in the Model A Club and the AACA Club and went on many antique car driving trips around the country in the Model A and the Mustang. Carol was active in her parish, Saint Pius X, in Cedar Rapids, especially using her gifted voice in the choir for many years. She loved to bake and is fondly remembered for her fought-over puppy chow and Christmas cookies, and her Red Velvet cake and Pineapple Upside-Down cake (Bob’s favorite), and the family favorite, ham balls. Carol sewed and liked trips to play the slots now and then. She also enjoyed a great community of friends at Keystone, Cedar Rapids. Most important to her was any time spent with family.

Carol is survived by her husband, Robert; three children, Barbra Kurtz, Julie (Gary) Raymond, and David (Charlotte) Schillig; five grandchildren, Carolyn (David) Gordon, Elizabeth (Theodore) Isbel, Fr. Tyler Raymond, Haley (Andrew) Brundell, and Willow Schillig; four great-grandchildren, Noah, Isla, Lucy, and Wells Gordon; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Emelyn Lenth, Marjorie Markey, and Dorothy Radloff; and brother, Bud Pape.

The family is incredibly thankful for the care she received through the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha, and Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids.

She will be missed by all who knew her, may she rest in peace in the arms of her loving Savior, Jesus Christ.
