Carol was born May 19, 1937 to Mary (Parbs) and Frank Poulson in Iowa City and raised in Center Point, Iowa. Carol attended Center Point High School. She married Charles A. Hartman in 1956 and attended the Paris Academy of Beauty, receiving her cosmetology license in 1957. Carol lived most of her life in Cedar Rapids but did live for a short time in Sioux City, Iowa, then for many years in Dallas, Texas Okeechobee, Florida with her husband, Dick Kelley. Dick, Carol’s parents, brothers William and Elzo, sisters Leona and Olive, and her beloved poodle Nicki preceded her in death.
Carol is survived by her sons, Charles Hartman, Chris Hartman, Casey Hartman, Craig (Deb) Hartman; sisters, Nadine (Jim) Anderson, Donna Mae (Don) McAtee; brother Richard (Bonnie) Poulson and their families; grandson Jeremy Hartman, and great grandchildren Dakota and Shaylynn. Family was important to Carol and she spoke often of her many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins. Carol was especially close to sister-in-law Nancy (Bob, deceased) Hartman and her family, and niece Luanna (Clarence) Hawkins and her family.
Carol will be remembered as a loving, unselfish, and caring mother and friend who was happiest when she was making others happy. She lived her life serving others by volunteering at many charities including the Olivet Neighborhood Mission, and oftentimes bought household items and clothing she could give to those less fortunate. Her favorite pass times were “rummaging,” playing Yahtzee, reading and watching the Iowa Hawkeyes play. Carol was known for her exceptional cooking, especially her fried chicken and cherry cobbler. As a devoted animal lover, Carol continued to give her help to the Animal Welfare Foundation even as her illness became more severe.
The family would like to recognize all the Mercy Hospital nurses and Hospice caregivers for the wonderful care and concern they provided to Carol during her numerous hospital stays and at her home over the last few weeks. Special thanks is extended to Laura Robinson (Red) for her friendship and dedication to assisting Carol in the last couple of years in her home.
Memorials may be given to the Animal Welfare Foundation of Iowa (AWF), Olivet Neighborhood Mission or a charity of your choice via Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home.
