Carl E. Whitaker, 100, of Manchester passed away on Sunday, December 8, 2024, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester surrounded by his family. Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, December 11, 2024, at Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home in Manchester. Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 12, 2024, at the funeral home with an additional visitation one hour prior to the service, Pete Buschmann will officiate. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Oakland Cemetery, Manchester.
Carl was born February 19, 1924, the son of Claud and Pearl (Scott) Whitaker at Weir, Kansas. His family moved to Iowa where Carl graduated from Oelwein High School. He entered into the United States Army Air Corps where he proudly served our country. On June 11, 1950, Carl was united in marriage to Verla Toletha Franks at the United Methodist Church in Randalia, Iowa, five children were born to this union.
Carl and Toletha settled in Manchester where they raised their family. He worked as a shoe salesman and manager for 45 years starting his career at Hurdles Shoes and retiring from Becker’s Shoes after 35years. Carl was a very faithful man; he found the Lord in August of 1940. He was a member of Edgewood Bible Church in Edgewood. He enjoyed working in his garden, tinkering, and going fishing.
Carl is survived by his five children, Tony Whitaker of Iowa City, Debra (John) Clute of Ames, Jody Holloway of Carrollton, TX, Chris (Dan) McDowell of Manchester, and DeAnn (Mark) Hennigs of St. Joseph, MN; ten grandchildren, Khyle (Kirstin) Clute, Kienan (Christine) Clute, Casey Clute, Harris Holloway, Gretchen (Scott) Anderson, Jeromie McDowell, Racheal (Kyle) Nodurft, Jacob Hennigs, Erik Hennigs, Jared Hennigs; twelve great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Geraldine Winkie; and numerous special nieces and nephews.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents, Claud and Pearl Whitaker; his wife of 62 years, Toletha Whitaker; and siblings, Floyd (Lucille) Whitaker, Lyle (Gladys) Whitaker, Roy (Doris) Whitaker, and Ruth (Alvin) Filby.
The family would like to say a special thank you to all those who enriched Carl’s fulfilling life. Your prayers, kindness and genuine friendships will be remembered.
