Carl E. Means, 68, of 2701 29th Street SW, Cedar Rapids, died, Tuesday, April 26, 2005, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, following effects of long-term diabetes. Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 30, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by Chaplain Ken Glandorf. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 29, 2005, and one hour before the service on Saturday at the funeral home. Burial: Czech National Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, with military honors.

Survivors include his wife, Janice Irene; his children, Mary Means and husband Matt Marth of Vienna, Austria, Alice Means of Vinton, Curtis Means and Nathan Means, both of Cedar Rapids; a sister, Maxine Means (Peterson) of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; a brother, Dale Means and wife Dee of Apple Valley, Minnesota; many nieces and nephews; and many dear and close friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas P. and Verena Margaret (Siegrist) Means; a sister, Barbara Jean Hobbs; and a brother, Calvin Leroy Means.

Carl was born in Clexico, California, on December 12, 1936, and lived as a child in southern Missouri and southeastern Utah. The family moved to Iowa in 1946, where he graduated from Callender High School in 1954. After college at Fort Dodge Junior College and the University of Iowa, he was drafted, spending his army time at Fort Carson, Colorado. Carl began teaching at Bloomfield, Iowa and moved to Cedar Rapids the fall of 1961. On June 7, 1964, he married Janice Irene James in Cedar Rapids.

Carl taught at Washington High School, Franklin Jr. High, Harding Jr. High and Kennedy High School before going to Jefferson High School as Assistant Principal in 1969. He stayed in administration until 1980, working at the ESC, Franklin and Wilson Jr. Highs before moving to Metro High School, where he taught in the classroom and the Learning Center until his retirement in 1995. Carl touched many lives through his teaching.

He had many interests and was involved in a number of activities. Carl was familiar to Gazette readers as a writer of articles and letters. He worked with the American Heart Association, was a Boy Scout leader, had leadership roles in the Democratic Party, and also had leadership roles in the Sierra Club. He met with the Iowa Environmental Council, and enjoyed the family cabin on the Wapsie River near Troy Mills. Carl was a member of the Linn County Conservation Board for five years. The family traveled and camped across the nation and in Canada.

A memorial fund has been established for the Wickiup Hill Learning Center and the Cedar Rapids Public Library for books on tape in memory of Carl.
