Carl V. Durbala, 85, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, June 30, 2018, at Hallmar Mercy under hospice care after a courageous battle with cancer. A memorial mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 7, 2018, at St. Jude Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids with visitation one hour prior, Rev. Denny Juhl officiating. Arrangements by Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids.

Carl will be greatly missed by his wife of 62 years, Jackie A. (Strellner); children, Janet, Dan, Brad, and Steve (Sara); grandchildren, Hunter, Blade, Dakota and Karma; sister, Rosemary Cobbs; and extended family and friends.

Carl was born August 8, 1932, in Lovilia, Iowa, to Bernice L. (Miller) and Carl L. Durbala. He spent the majority of his life in Cedar Rapids, where he was a long time member of St. Jude Catholic Church. After graduating high school in Newton, Iowa, in 1951, he worked at Maytag. In 1952, Carl moved to Cedar Rapids, and became a 65 year member of the Plumbers & Pipefitter Union Local 125. He is the second of four generations to proudly work in the union. Carl was the business manager from 1976 to 1982, and held many other offices in the union.

Carl served in the Iowa National Guard. He was an active member of the church, volunteering time to the community. At age 76 he was helping rebuild homes affected by the 2008 flood with a group of retired plumbers and pipefitters. Carl enjoyed tennis at Westfield Tennis Club for many years. Several of his hobbies revolved around the outdoors, hunting, fishing and spotting those elusive morels. Carl spent many hours playing cards and bowling with friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Paul and Dennis; and many family members and friends.
