Calvin Myron Musselman
April 21, 1925 — July 13, 2013
Calvin Myron Musselman, 88, of Marion, died Saturday, July 13, 2013, at Summit Pointe. Funeral Service: 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 9, 2013, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion with the Reverend Dr. Nancy Redman officiating. Visitation with the family will be held at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Inurnment will be at Valley View Cemetery in Genoa, Nebraska, at a later date.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley; sons, Thomas (Linda) of Skillman, New Jersey and Edward (Cindy) of Mechanicsville; grandchildren, Teresa Kavanagh of Anchorage, Alaska, Carrie Musselman of Walker, Minnesota, and Amy Musselman of Skillman, New Jersey; his brother-in-law, Carrol Pearson of Columbus, Nebraska; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Marvin and Henry; and sisters, Phyllis Pearson and Velma Musselman.
Calvin was born April 21, 1925, in Genoa, Nebraska, to Albert O. Musselman and Edna A. Musselman. He attended elementary school in Genoa and graduated from Genoa High School in 1942. Immediately following graduation, Calvin enlisted in the US Navy. He took Basic Training at Great Lakes NAS. From there he was sent to the Navy Pier in Chicago for training on aircraft maintenance. Calvin was then sent to US Navy Air Wing 15 bomber squadron, Port Lyautey (Kenitra) North Africa. There he repaired and maintained B24 bombers.
Calvin returned home and married Shirley Winell on November 27, 1944. They moved to Kansas City where Calvin attended Central Radio and Television School. Moving then to Iowa, Calvin worked several jobs including as a transmitter and studio engineer with KXEL radio station. During this time Calvin and Shirley lived in Waterloo, Dysart, and LaPorte City. Sons, Thomas and Edward, were born during this time. Calvin’s next major job was with Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids. The family moved to Marion and Calvin retired at age 60 from Rockwell Collins.
Calvin cherished his family and especially enjoyed his three grandchildren. He was a lifelong avid reader and student, constantly taking courses and training. He loved music, notably anything Glenn Miller ever recorded. He will be remembered as a warm, friendly man with a wonderful sense of humor. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Marion.
