Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, December 23, 2011 at the United Methodist Church in Manchester by Rev. Michael Druhl. Visitation will be from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m., Thursday, December 22, 2011 at Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Manchester. Additional visitation: one hour before services Friday at the church. Burial: Oakland Cemetery, Manchester.
Calvin was born March 6, 1925 in rural Colesburg, the son of Clarence and Irene (Timmons) Hartbeck. Following graduation from Colesburg High School, he went to Northwestern College in Minneapolis, MN, earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from William Penn College in Oskaloosa, IA, and a Masters Degree from Scarritt College in Nashville, TN. On July 28, 1968, he was united in marriage to Earline E. Morris Hilsenbeck. Earline passed away, February 24, 2011 following 42 years of marriage.
Calvin was a member of the Manchester United Methodist Church. He and Earline farmed for many years near Colesburg before retiring. Calvin and Earline were antique buffs, enjoyed traveling at home and abroad, and tending to their cats. He loved writing poetry (several of which were published), many stories, and wrote Christmas plays for the Colesburg United Methodist Church. He also enjoyed singing and making jewelry.
Calvin is survived by three step-children; Shane (Melody) Hilsenbeck of Carthage, MO, Sharon Maiers of Manchester and Shirlene Lahr of Marion; 11 step-grandchildren Chris (Kevin) Taylor, Sherri Forkenbrock, Bob (Angela) Maiers, Kim (Kurt) Huber, Mary Phillabaum, Vaughn Lahr, Verlynn Lahr, Greg (Linda) Lahr, Caleb Hilsenbeck, Leah Hilsenbeck, Hannah Hilsenbeck; 10 step-great-grandchildren, Zachary Taylor, Karlee Taylor, Allison (Blake) Heman, Chase Forkenbrock, Ryan Maiers, Abby Maiers, Megan Huber, Nicole Phillabaum, Garrett Lahr, Maddie Lahr; two step-great-great-grandchildren, Nolan Heman and Caroline Heman; two sisters, Joyce Woeste of Colesburg and Mildred (Lawrence) Jensen of New Hampton, IA and numerous nieces and nephews.
Calvin was preceded in death by his wife, Earline Hartbeck; his parents, Clarence and Irene Hartbeck; a brother, Ivan Hartbeck, a sister, Lucille Meade; and a son-in-law, Robert J. Maiers.
