Bruce H. Sawyer, 58, of Coggon, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 26, 2005. Services: 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 31, 2005, at Golden Congregational Church in rural Ryan, by Pastor Mona Burns. Friends may call from 11 a.m. to service time Tuesday at the church. Burial with military honors at Golden Prairie Cemetery Cemetery. Arrangements are with Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Central City.

Survivors include five daughters, Jennie Sawyer (John Lipscomb) of Garland, Texas, Jamie (Jeff) Kenton of Towson, Maryland, Marie (James) Mathews of Urbana, Karen Sawyer (Josh Long) of Marion and Jayne (Troy) Thomas of Coggon; honorary son, Andy Harrison of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Tyson and Kiana Mathews, Preston Thomas and two on the way!; sisters, Ann (Craig) Danner of Marshalltown and Dot Poole of Gladbrook; a brother, David Sawyer of Grand Island, Nebraska; his father, Howard (Betty) Sawyer of Freemont, Nebraska; his mother, Evelyn (Arnold) Gummert of Gilman; and his former wives, Hazel Klar of Marshalltown and Charlene Sawyer of Marion.

He was preceded in death by his paternal and maternal grandparents, uncles and a brother-in-law.

Bruce was born on May 22, 1947, the son of Howard and Evelyn (Kroeger) Sawyer, in Glendale, California. He graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1965 and served as a submarine sailor in the U.S. Navy from 1965 - 1971. Bruce was employed at Janda Electric Motor Services for twenty years.

Bruce was a member of GPT and legend has it he came back from a "chip and a chair." He was creative, artistic, enjoyed working with his hands and was a culinary master without the degree. He was a wonderful father and grandfather and touched many lives. Bruce will be greatly missed.
