Bob J. Eckert, 86, of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, February 11, 2004, at Heritage Nursing & Rehab Center, following a short illness. Family will greet friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, February 14, 2004, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Inurnment: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids at a later date.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Ruth; two sons, James (Ann) Eckert and Larry Eckert, all of Cedar Rapids; three grandchildren, Steven of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Jean Eckert of Albia, Iowa, and David (Laura) Eckert of Ely; and a great-granddaughter, Anna.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Dorothy; and an infant daughter, Sharon Lou.

Bob was born January 15, 1918, the son of Harvey and Ula (Bunger) Eckert, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. On April 18, 1943, he was united in marriage to Ruth Ann Markham. A lifelong resident of Cedar Rapids, Bob worked for the city of Cedar Rapids in the Treasurer?s Office and the Planning and Redevelopment Office, retiring in 1980. He was a 74- year member of the First Congregational Church in Cedar Rapids and a lifetime member of the Daybreak Optimists. Bob served as past president of the Jefferson Band Parents, leader of Scout Troop #33, former board member of the Community Concert Association, former board member of the Ushers Ferry Pioneer Village, and a member of the Iowanderer Camping Group. He also was a volunteer for Cedar Rapids Meals on Wheels and the American Cancer Society. Bob will be truly missed by his family and friends.
