Billy L. Sawyer

Billy L. Sawyer, 89, of Central City, died Monday, January 12, 2004, at Monticello Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, following a brief illness. Memorial services: 10 a.m. Wednesday, January 14, 2004, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Central City by Rev. Del Bear with Masonic services by Level Masonic Lodge No. 284 AF & AM of Central City. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Inurnment: Mt. Clark Cemetery in Central City with military rites by American Legion Wapsi Post No. 421 of Central City.
Survivors include his wife and lifelong companion of 67 years, Eleanor; his son, Jack Sawyer and wife Linda of Central City; three grandchildren, Tracy Beaton and husband Todd of Cedar Rapids, Tom VanZante of Cedar Rapids and Dr. Taylor Sawyer of Honolulu, Hawaii and his fiancé, Leah Geyer of Stewartstown, Pennsylvania; and two great-grandchildren, Ryan and Jacob Beaton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Darrel and Dick Sawyer.
Billy was born April 5, 1914, the son of Guy and Mabel (Reed) Sawyer, in Central City. On May 22, 1936, he married Eleanor M. Shafer in Dubuque. Billy served with the U.S. Navy during WWII. He worked as a steel burner for Barnard & Leas in Cedar Rapids for over 25 years, retiring in 1976. Billy was a member of American Legion Wapsi Post No. 421 of Central City, Level Masonic Lodge No. 284 AF & AM and past member of Central City AmVets Post No. 37.
Billy loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting, camping and spending time with family and friends. He loved to talk and tell stories. Billy was greatly loved and will be dearly missed.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Billy?s memory.
