Beulah was born May 17, 1924, at home, on the farm near Canton, Jackson County, Iowa, one of five children born to Bert and Pearl (Scott) Saunders. She grew up on the farm where she was born. Beulah received her early education on the old stone country school in Canton. She continued her high school years at Maquoketa High. Always a good student, Beulah graduated 7th place in her large class. She excelled at typing and shorthand, winning awards at many competitions.

During the war years of World War II, she had two very interesting jobs. She worked first for the Rationing Board in Jackson County. Many items were rations, among them was gasoline. She met the young man she would later marry when he came to that office for his gasoline allotment while home on leave from the Army. After a whirlwind romance of one week, they became engaged.

During the time of their engagement, her fiancé was on active duty overseas, and Beulah took a job at the Pentagon in Washington D.C. For a young woman from a small town in Iowa, this was a brave step. She often fondly recalled her time there.

Beulah and Elmer Duhme were married August 25, 1946, in Maquoketa. She spent the rest of her working years as an active farm wife. Many of those years were spent on dairy farms, one of the most demanding types of farming, with rarely a day off. In spite of that, she found time to become an excellent cook. She raised large gardens; canning and freezing much of what she grew. She made time for several organizations; the VFW Auxiliary, and later became a member of the Marion-Linn Chapter DAR, and the Society of Mayflower Descendants. She also conducted extensive research of the Duhme family history.

Beulah is survived by her daughter, Nancy (Richard) McCoy of Cedar Rapids; her son, Fred (Elizabeth) Duhme of Roberts, WI; her grandson, Michael (Cindi) McCoy; and great-grandchildren, Realle, Dorothy, and Charles, all of Los Angeles, CA. She is also survived by her siblings, Lloyd Saunders of Clarence, Peg (Elmer) Harder of Maquoketa, and Marge (David) Clemens of Cedar Rapids; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and sister, Myrtle Watters.

A memorial fund has been established in Beulah’s memory.
