Betty Jean Slager, 71, of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, January 20, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center, following a long illness. In accordance with Betty?s wishes, there will be no services or visitation at this time. Private family interment will take place at Bear Creek Cemetery in rural Brandon, Iowa at a later date. Arrangements by Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion.
Survivors include her children, Greg Slager and wife Beverly and their children, Carrie and Todd, Alan Slager and companion Chris Becicka and Christie Nutt and her children, Erin and Kelsey, all of Cedar Rapids.
She is also survived by two sisters, Connie Wells and husband Lee of Cedar Rapids and Dorothy Myers and husband Oddis of Des Moines; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Clarence.
Betty was born October 9, 1931, the daughter of Walter and Grace (Weimaster) VanFleet in rural Garrison, Iowa. She graduated from Garrison High School in 1947 at which time she married Clarence Slager and moved to Cedar Rapids. After Clarence?s death in 1966, Betty began working at Lisle Ramsey Studio, later purchasing the business and running the studio until 1990. After selling the studio, Betty worked at J.C. Penney in the fine jewelry department until her retirement in 2001.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. David Cowden and his nurse, Pat, along with the staff at Mercy Medical Center for all of the love and support they have shown to Betty during the time of her illness.
