Betty Jane Mayfield, 83, 0f 632 20th Avenue S.W., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Thursday, January 1, 2009, at Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha, from lung cancer. Memorial Service: 4:00 p.m., Saturday, January 10, 2009, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, where family will greet friends from 1:00 p.m. until service time on Saturday. Rev. Ed Powers will officiate. Inurnment: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include children, Bruce (Dorothy) Mayfield of Kenmore, New York and Chris (Deb) Mayfield of Marion; grandchildren, Amanda, Matthew, George, Andrew, Patrick, Daniel, Jean, Colleen, Kathleen, Eileen, Nikki and Karie; four great grandchildren and one on the way; sister, Maxine Gordon; brother-in-law, Robert (Stephanie) Mayfield of Zephyrhills, Florida; sisters-in-law, Marilyn (Roger) Walker of Dewey, Arizona and Dorothy Hansen of Graham, Washington; and several nieces and nephews.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, George; parents; son, Steven Mayfield on September 4, 2006; six brothers; and three sisters.
Betty was born August 28, 1925, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Soren and Sena (Petersen) Hansen. A lifelong resident of Cedar Rapids, Betty graduated from Wilson High School in 1943. On June 30, 1947, she was united in marriage to George Mayfield. He died June 10, 2007. Betty retired as a server for Dostal Catering.
Betty was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church for 50 years. She belonged to Chada Pautz Circle and was a 30 year member of the American Legion Auxiliary #5. She loved the Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears, fishing, crafts and crocheting.
