Betty A. Lewis, 79, formerly of Manchester, Iowa, died Sunday evening, October 5, 2008, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, Iowa, after a short illness.

Funeral Services will be 1:00 p.m., Thursday, October 9, 2008 at the United Methodist Church in Manchester with Rev. Roger Henry. Family will greet friends one hour before services on Thursday. Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Service are in charge of the arrangements. Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery in Manchester.

Betty was born April 27, 1929 in Otis, Colorado, the daughter of Maurice and Anna (Kruger) Weir. She attended public schools in Otis, graduating in 1947. Betty was united in marriage to James Junior Lewis on August 18, 1950 in San Diego, California where James was serving in the U.S. Navy. They moved to Northeast Iowa in 1952. Following James death in 1966, Betty took over her husband’s position as the Depot Agent for the Milwaukee Railroad in Waucoma, IA. Moving to Manchester in 1979, Betty worked at the Good Neighbor Home in dietary and then as a home health care aide. She moved to Toledo in 1990 and the Iowa Veterans’ Home in 2002.

Betty was active in many groups and organizations including the American Legion Auxiliary, the Iowa Veterans Home Resident Council, the Red Hat Ladies, and the United Methodist Women as well as volunteering at Tama County Clothes Closet. She was an avid reader and letter writer and was known for her no-nonsense yet caring and giving attitude.

Betty is survived by her four daughters, Patricia (Victor) Schmitz of Quasqueton, Joanna (Mike) Hofer of Toledo, Judy (Rick) Gallagher of Manchester, and Teresa (Garry) Hofer of Toledo; one brother, Ed (Judy) Weir of Denver, Colorado; and one sister, Esther Weir of Aurora, Colorado; 18 grandchildren, Val (Bob) Odegard, Jim Knox, Sandy (Steve) McMurrin, Tammy Schmitz, Rod (Jeri) Schmitz, Dallas (John) Schroeder, Leann (Murray) Yeltman, Michelle Hoing, Christy (Colby) Fontinel, Amanda (Kevin) Harken, Eddie (Ashley) Hofer, Jennifer (Josh) Diesburg, Michael Gallagher, Nathan Hofer, Matthew Hofer, James Hofer, Deloria (Timothy) Payne, and Aaron (Lena) Hofer; 37 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Maurice and Anna Weir; her husband, James Junior Lewis; six siblings, Roy Weir, Walter Weir, Ora Kraft, May Hosford, Donald Weir, and Harold Weir; one granddaughter; one grandson; and one great-grandson.
