Betty Jane Ledvina, a past resident of Linn County, Iowa, passed away Monday, March 14, 2016, at Cornwall Manor, in Cornwall, Pennsylvania. Betty was born April 7, 1926, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She was the daughter of William H. Poole, Sr. and Fredona Shepard Poole. She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Edward, her mother, father, a brother, William H Poole, Jr., and a half sister, Leone Holsinger, all of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Betty worked for a number of different companies in the Cedar Rapids area, but it was while working at Collins Radio that she met her husband, Ed Ledvina. During their lives together, Ed and Betty found joy in building new homes – eight in total – in the communities in which they lived. In the 1960’s and 1970’s they and their boys enjoyed travel and camping.

While her children were in school, Betty worked as a cook in the school lunch programs so she could be home when her children needed her. Later, she and her husband owned and operated a retail hardware business in Boone, Iowa for a number of years. However, most of her working career was spent as a bank officer for banks in Iowa, Illinois and Florida.

She has always been active in church work. In the churches where she held membership in Iowa, Illinois, Florida and Virginia, she was always involved with the women’s organizations as well as the governing bodies of each church. After moving to Abingdon, Virginia, in 1991, she was a member of Pleasant View Methodist Church and later, Abingdon United Methodist Church.

She was an active volunteer in various local clubs and projects wherever they have lived. Her most enjoyable projects involved organizing means to provide for needy families. In Abingdon Newcomers, she was chairperson for many years of the committee whose main project was Adopt A Family providing for needy families of the area. Later, she was an organizing factor of a group called ‘We Help Others’, whose main purpose is to help those who are less fortunate.

Betty is survived by three sons, Timothy and his wife, Jean, of Gainesville, Florida, Lon and his wife, Daniele of Sumner, Washington, and Jay and his wife, Suellen of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, eight grandchildren, James, Kelley, Lori, Amy, Aaron, Adam, Lara and Justin; and fourteen great grandchildren. Betty’s family was the most important part of her life. She felt so blessed to have her large adoring family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Abingdon United Methodist Church, Abingdon, Virginia or the We Help Others Organization.
