Betty Jean Hammond, 75, of Living Center West, formerly of Geneva Towers, Cedar Rapids, died Friday October 17, 2008, at the care center, following a brief illness: Services: 12:00 noon, Thursday, October 23, 2008, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. The family will greet friends from 10:00 a.m. until service time on Thursday at the funeral home. Burial: Postville Cemetery, Postville, Iowa.
Survivors include her son, Lyle of Oskaloosa, Iowa; a sister, Marsha Nost and her husband, Gregory Karasek of Cedar Rapids; several cousins; and her friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; aunts, uncles and cousins.
Betty was born September 11, 1933, the daughter of John “Jack” and Lila (Gulsvig) Renzman, in Postville, Iowa. She attended Postville Community Schools and was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. After moving to Cedar Rapids to be near her sister, Betty became a member of the First Lutheran Church on Third Avenue. Betty was a 20 year member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxilliary No. 2272 in Cedar Rapids and also a District 7-AA Group.
She loved the outdoors, often going fishing with her family, taking bus trips and visiting the apple orchards. Betty enjoyed eating her favorite “Gunder Burger” when she visited her home area. An avid Hawkeye and Chicago Cubs fan, she also enjoyed bowling and following golf for many years.
The family wishes to give special thanks to the staff at Geneva Towers, Living Center West, Sisters of Mercy and Hospice of Mercy and all others who gave their love and support during the last years of her life. God Bless you all!
