E. Betty “Babe” Rose Oberbroeckling, 92, of Manchester, Iowa, died Tuesday morning, May 22, 2007, at the Good Neighbor Home, Manchester, following a short illness.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, May 24, 2007, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Manchester, with Rev. Jack Flaherty officiating. Visitation is from 3:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Wednesday, with a 5:30 pm Scripture Service, at the Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Manchester, and for an hour before services on Thursday at the church. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Earlville.
Betty was born the daughter of Frank and Josephine (Wedewer) Niehaus, on March 6, 1915, at her parent's farm in rural Colesburg. Betty and her brother boarded with the nuns and attended St. Boniface School in New Vienna. In 1933, Betty was united in marriage with Leo Weber in Colesburg. The couple farmed near Earlville and were married forty-two years. Leo passed away in 1975. On February 25, 1978, Betty then married Carl Kragenbrink in Earlville. The couple resided in Manchester. Carl died in September 2, 1984. On October 5, 1988, Betty married Lawrence Oberbroeckling at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Manchester. Lawrence died March 21, 1995. Betty later moved into Senior Housing.
Betty played the organ at the Colesburg Church. She was a meticulous groundskeeper and gardener, even winning an award from the city for her yard. She could be found working in her yard from early spring until fall. She also enjoyed cooking and baking. Betty canned much of her garden crop and found pride sharing it with others. She and Lawrence were woodworkers where she would do the finish work of staining and assembling.
Betty's family includes her son and his family, Charles & Cathie Weber of Fayetteville, NC; and her three grandchildren, Anna Marie Fillippetti and Teresa Weber, both of Simpsonville, SC, Lisa Starling of Fayetteville, NC; four great-grandchildren; two great great-grandchildren; her step-children and their spouses, Bill (Dianne) Oberbroeckling, Shirley (Jack) Klaus, and Bonnie Mullis, all of Manchester; Wayne (Ellen) Oberbroeckling of Clear Lake, Kathy (Ron) Boeckenstedt of New Vienna, and Jean Oberbroeckling (Leon Lueck) of Swisher; 16 step-grandchildren; 15 step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews, including Norma (Herb) Steffen of Farley.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; former husbands, Leo, Carl and Lawrence; a brother and his wife, Clement & Tillie Niehaus; an infant grandson, Mark Weber; a great-grandson, Lance Fillippetti; and a step-great-grandson, Jordan Oberbroeckling.
