Bette J. Mayfield, 85, of 1047 27th Street N.E., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Wednesday, February 28, 2007, in her home following a lengthy illness. Memorial Service: 12:00 p.m., Saturday, March 3, 2007, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by Chaplain Dave Soldner. The family will greet friends from 11:00 until noon Saturday at the funeral home. Inurnment: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include her daughters, Carolyn Chapman of Scottsdale, Arizona, Wendee Deal (Les) of Cedar Rapids and Tricia Speer (Jerry) also of Cedar Rapids; two sisters, Louise Wagner of Cedar Rapids and Virginia McConaughy of Tacoma, Washington;. five grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and her companion, Highway.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Richard Shaffer; a sister, Beatrice Scholzen; and a son-in-law, Don Chapman.
Bette was born June 21, 1921, in Gladstone, Iowa, the daughter of Robert Shaffer and Louise (Doyle) Shaffer. A longtime resident of Cedar Rapids, she worked for Collins Radio, retiring after 23 years.
Bette attended services at Noelridge Baptist Church and was a former member of the Eastern Star. She was an always loving, supportive mother and grandmother, who made many sacrifices for her three daughters.
Bette?s daughters would like to express their gratitude to the staff at Amenity Hospice, especially Joyce, Bethany and Jennifer.
