Bertha Elizabeth Oliphant, 90, formerly of Toddville, died Wednesday, February 25, 2009, at St. Luke’s Hospital, after a short illness. She had recently resided at Heritage Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Cedar Rapids. Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 2, 2009, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion by Rev. Del Bear. Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial: Oliphant Cemetery, rural Toddville.
Survivors include two daughters, Verlene (Joe) McCoy and Jane (Ken) Davis, all of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren, Troy (Michelle) Cronbaugh, Trena Cronbaugh, Kelli Davis, Kristie (Hal) Davis, Kendra (Derek) Heggebo; great-grandchildren, Tyresea, Caleb and Caitlyn, Kaisey and Kelsey, Zackary, Dylan, Karie, Jason and Kaitlin; and a brother, John Peterson of Cedar Rapids.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Vern, on June 4, 1997; a brother, Bobby Edward Peterson; and her sister-in-law, Helen Peterson.
Bertha was born the daughter of James and Minnie (Dronebarger) Peterson on March 3, 1918, in rural Marion. She married Vern Oliphant on January 13, 1939, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. She was a member of the Green’s Grove Church in Toddville. The couple made their home in rural Toddville farming. After Vern went to the nursing home, Bertha moved to Cedar Rapids. She received such enjoyment talking with and waving at all of her wonderful neighbors. She will be greatly missed by those who knew her and by those who loved her.
