Bertha L. Holland, 89, a resident of Linn Manor Care Center in Marion, a lifelong resident of the Central City area, died Saturday, April 23, 2005, at the care center, following a short illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 27, 2005, at Jordan?s Grove Baptist Church, rural Central City by Rev. Steve Russell. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Central City. Burial: Jordan?s Grove Cemetery, rural Central City.
Survivors include her children, Tom (Minnie) Holland of Springville, Roberta (Ed) Hoffman of Cedar Rapids, Phyllis Holland of Grundy Center and Anita (Gerald) Silver of Central City; a brother, Alfred (Marian) Hoge of Albuquerque, New Mexico; seven grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and four step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a sister, Florence Knight; and three brothers, Harold, Alvin and Ernest Hoge.
Bertha was born March 20, 1916, the daughter of Arthur and Evalina (Shaw) Hoge in Linn County. On January 4, 1938, she married Hozel J. Holland. He died August 11, 1985. Bertha attended school at Springville, Scattergood in West Branch and Olney in Barnesville, Ohio. Bertha was a very active member of Jordan?s Grove Baptist Church and Jordan?s Grove Ladies Aid. She enjoyed gardening and raising flowers and assisting people in time of need.
Bertha was a very loving person, and she will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
