Bernice E. McVay, 72, of 1005 9th Street NW, Cedar Rapids, passed away Saturday, January 24, 2004, at home following a long illness. Services: 3:00 p.m., January 27, 2004, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by Rev. Charles Stevens. Friends may call from 2 -3 p.m., prior to service at the funeral home. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include her daughters, Barbara Tompkins of Center Point, Nancy Perry of Cedar Rapids, Sherry Witt of Solon, Judy Lovelett of Iowa City and Peggy Stangland of Cedar Rapids, who was also her caregiver; a son, David McVay; 19 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a son, Dennis; and her siblings, Lloyd Sterns, Donald Sterns, Mildren Wolfe, Mable Sterns, and Orvil Sterns.
Bernice was born November 21, 1931, the daughter of Elmer and Sylvia (Rhea) Sterns. On October 30, 1953, she married J.D. McVay in Kahoka, Missouri. He died March 5, 2003. Bernice was a member of the First Church of the Open Bible. She will be greatly missed.
