Berneal Louise Peden, 89, a resident of Solon Care Center, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, August 25, 2007 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids following a short illness. Services: 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 28, 2007 at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion. The family will greet friends from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Monday, August 27, at the funeral home. Burial: Campbell Cemetery in Bertram.
Survivors include a son, Eugene (Linda) Peden of Santa Anna, California; a daughter, Sharon (Kenneth) Shaver of Des Moines; a son, Dan (Dixie) Peden of Ely; fourteen grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and a cousin, Enid Wright of Cedar Rapids, who was raised as Berneal’s sister.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin; her parents, George and Hazel; an infant son, Dennis (Daniel’s twin); and two brothers, Louis and Kenneth Hensley.
Berneal was born on December 18, 1917 in Cedar Rapids to George and Hazel (Cox) Hensley. She graduated from Cedar Rapids Washington High School in 1935. On December 22, 1940, Berneal married Marvin H. Peden in Cedar Rapids. She and Marvin wintered for many years with their children in California. Marvin died on October 30, 1991, after over 50 years of marriage. Berneal worked from 1960 to 1967 at the Ellis Boulevard A&W, and at what was known as the 1st Avenue Burger King from 1967 to 1982.
Berneal was a member of Noelridge Christian Church in Cedar Rapids and was very active at the Witwer Senior Center, where she enjoyed exercise classes, bingo, and keno. Berneal was a very warm and open person, often serving as the “welcome committee” for new residents of the care center where she resided. She was dearly loved and will be missed greatly by her family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials should be directed to either the Witwer Senior Center, Cedar Rapids or to Noelridge Christian Church, Cedar Rapids in Berneal’s memory.
