Bernard J. "Spike? Mullaley, 84, of Mt. Vernon, formerly of Marion, died Thursday, November 4, 2004, in his home, following a long illness. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 8, 2004, at St. John?s Catholic Church in Mt. Vernon, by the Rev. David Ambrosy. Graveside Services: 1:30 p.m. Monday at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Cedar Rapids with military honors. Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Marion, with Vigil Service at 4 p.m.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; three sisters, Mary Colby of Marion, Kathleen O?Brien of Oelwein, and Agnes Kelly of Tuscon, Arizona; two step-daughters, Mary (Charles) Brendeland of Ankeny and Ann (Doug) Ash of Mt. Vernon.
Also surviving are three grandchildren, Meredith, Tom and Christopher.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Anna Schnoebelen; and a brother, Michael Mullaley.
Bernard was born the son of Edward and Anna (Timmer) Mullaley on June 19, 1920, in Marion, where he was united in marriage to Dorothy (Light) Dvorak on August 23, 1975. He graduated from Marion High School and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked for the United States Postal Service for over thirty years and also served as Postmaster in Marion. Bernard was a member of St. John?s Catholic Church in Mt. Vernon, Knights of Columbus Council 909 of Cedar Rapids, Elks Lodge 251, Cedar Rapids and a fifty year member of American Legion Marion Post No. 298, serving as past Commander, who will provide military honors.
