Bennie W. Grimm, 71, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Thursday, January 21, 2010, in Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m., Monday, January 25, 2010, at St. Ludmila Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, by Rev. Tom McDermott. Visitation: 3 to 8 p.m., Sunday, January 24, 2010, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, where a scripture service will be held at 7 p.m. and visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his wife, Donna; his children, Bennie L. Grimm, Lynnette (Denny) McDonnell both of Cedar Rapids and Tammie Grimm of Tipton; five grandchildren, Benjamin “BJ” Grimm, Tyler Grimm, Morgan Grimm, Jacob McDonnell and Jennifer McDonnell; sister, Beverly (Bill Kellog) Ballard; brothers, Lloyd “Dick” (Berdena) Grimm, Ronnie Grimm and Delbert (Nettie Lee) Grimm; sisters-in-law, Marlus Grimm, Betty Grimm and Vera Grimm; and special friend, Rich Kubu.
Bennie was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Margery (Bob) Ballard, brothers, Jack Grimm, Wayne Grimm and Glenn Grimm; and special friend, Judy Kubu.
Born August 9, 1938, in Van Horne, Iowa, Bennie was the son of Harold and Edith (Guingrich) Grimm. He served his country in the U.S. Naval Reserve and then in the U.S. Army. On June 3, 1961, he was united in marriage to Donna Carney, in Williamsburg, Iowa. He worked for Cedar Rapids Block Company, but really enjoyed working for A.W. Schmidt Transfer for 35 years.
After retiring, Bennie greatly enjoyed helping at Options of Linn County where he was known as “Uncle Bennie”. Other joys were helping neighbors and children and visiting with people. He loved traveling, the outdoors, farming, tinkering in his shop and gambling in the Casino. Bennie was loved by all and called "Dad" by many.
Military honors will be provided by American Legion Post #727.
A memorial fund has been established in Bennie’s memory.
