Benjamin Joseph Ries, 12, of Alburnett, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 1, 2005, after a courageous five year battle with cancer. Services: 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 8, 2005, at the First Assembly of God Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Visitation: 3:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 7, 2005, at the church. Arrangements by Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Center Point.
Survivors include his proud parents, Steve and Jodie Ries; a sister, Rachel; grandparents, Carl and Marian Kahler and Charles and Geraldene Ries; great-grandmas, Lena White and Alice Kahler; aunts and uncles, Glennis and Kevin Miller, Rose and Chris Sackett, Lynne and Greg Ternus, Paul and Karilea Ries, Gene and Kate Ries, Sarah and Mark Erickson, Mike Kahler, Dave and Tonya Kahler; 17 cousins; and many great- aunts, uncles and cousins.
Ben was preceded in death by his great-grandparents, Alphonse and Gertrude Ries, Philip and Margaret Villhauer, Dick Kahler and Boyd White; and a cousin, Reece Erickson.
Ben was born October 4, 1992, the son of Steve and Jodie (Kahler) Ries in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Ben was a 6th grader at Alburnett School. Ben had a love for baseball, hunting and was an avid Hawkeye and Cubs fan. Ben was the inspiration for the Aiming For A Cure Foundation, which raises money for pediatric oncology patients in Iowa with Cancer.
Ben was a member of the Center Point United Methodist Church. To know Ben is to find a young man who has fought a tough battle with cancer, yet still meets everyone with a smile, a story and a reason to understand the priorities and importance of Faith, Family and Friends.
The family would like to thank Dr. Tannous and the entire staff at the University of Iowa Hospital for going above and beyond.
Instead of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
